Making Gemstones

For months I struggled with making resin gemstones, until I finally stumbled upon HCC Cosplay Group's Polyester Resin Jewel-Making Tutorial They've pretty much got it pegged.

I've since experimented with the process, and have taken all of the knowledge I've acquired and put it into these YouTube Videos:

Casting Resin Gemstones: Part I

Casting Resin Gemstones: Part II

Not only will these videos show you how to cast gemstones, but they'll show you how to back them with foil as well. I haven't learned much more about resin casting since I made these videos, except for the fact that Castin' Craft has now started making an epoxy resin that's been formulated to have smaller air bubbles. Thus, it is ideal for casting gemstones 2" in diameter and smaller. You can find more information about it on this page:

Michael's Crafts and many other craft stores are stocking it now, so I recommend using it if you want to cast clear resin jewels without having to deal with the smell and stickiness of polyester resin.

If you want information on the casting of custom-molded faceted jewels, (or the making of gems out of polymer clay, styrofoam, and other materials,) you can find it in The Cosplayer's Prop and Armor Compendium Volume 4: Accessories. (pluggity plug ^_~)
